TBI- What We Go Through

From the Newsome Melton article, Diffuse Axonal Injury it states: “About 90% of survivors with severe diffuse axonal injury remain unconscious. The 10% that regain consciousness are often severely impaired.”
I would describe it as “shaking baby syndrome”, but of course I am not a baby. The brain itself was shaking inside the liquid in my skull and hit the sides, injuring it in multiple places instead of a head-on brain injury where it mostly just affects one region of the brain. The Hippocampus is usually not affected in brain injuries because it’s located in the center, but because of the type of brain injury I had, this and my memory were affected. I could not continue without my God in place. He has given me the strength to continue to beat all the odds. They said I’d never walk, talk, and I’d pretty much lay in bed for the rest of my life. I have been determined to improve as soon as I got out of my coma.

From the article Amnesia After Head Injury: Understanding Causes and Signs, it states: “The hippocampus plays a vital role in encoding memory. Therefore, most of the side effects of hippocampal damage revolve around memory. With Anterograde amnesia, the person cannot remember new information. They cannot remember a conversation they just had, for example. They can, however, remember data and events that occurred before their injury.” I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone and it’s not something you can look at lightly. There are times that I have conversations that I already had before. People will tell me “Oh, you’ve already told me that”, and that’s very frustrating. Not being able to remember what you did that morning is very aggravating. I used to keep notes on what I did throughout the day, but I don’t do that anymore because it has gotten better. I do, however, remember in detail, events that happened before my accident.

I'd imagine that an EEG would show angellic activity in the brain of one of the most inspirational people i know... Stay faithful and true Thomas!
