Your Sense of Purpose: For many, belief provides a "macro" reason for being. Without it, you might find yourself shifting from a divinely ordained purpose to a "self-authored" one—where you have to define your own meaning through work, relationships, or personal passions. Having a sense of purpose weeds out the negative crap. Coping with adversity is a big one for me. I’m not in jail, but I can no longer do as I please. I’m in a facility, bless everyone here for taking care of me. I was so mad when this first happened. Why me? After a lot of reflection, I realized I had to get over my feelings. Things are just different. Not taking out your frustrations or negative thoughts on those around you, whether that is friends, family, care team members; gets you out of the negative loop.

I restarted swimming this last weekend with an instructor. He was able to focus on my breath work and how to breathe into my stomach to allow me to have buoyancy in the water. This not only helps me in the water to stay afloat but also helps me with my breathing on land. We also started practicing my arm strokes. Also, arm strokes while breathing so I do not need to stop between strokes. And then all these skills come together so I can: 1. swim a stroke 2. take breaths along the way 3. stay a float when I am taking a breath. 4. and bonus points for using the “cross-over turn” help turn while still breathing I want to give a shout out to Sean, my swim instructor, for his patience to take it step by step. From the outside it is easy to assume I should be able to do all this. But I am having to start over. He can help me develop. It is good to be surrounded by people that can follow your process. It would be easy to say, I am an adult, I should be able to do this. But that is not always the case for people. There are a lot of different circumstances why people want to take lessons as adults.
Swimming is freeing. It’s kind of like all of your worries dissipate. All your focus is honed in on what you are doing. I guess you can say it is kind of like an escape room, except you aren’t trying to get out; you’re trying to get in. It creates a balanced environment to have both relaxation and exercise occur naturally. The leisure aspect (standing in the pool, but not actually swimming, talking, having conversations; really, just hanging out) allows you to calm yourself and be more open to instruction. It sends signals to your brain that you are relaxed and safe, which is the prime motivating aspect. The exercise part of swimming is just go, go, go. It looks easy, but it is not easy. There is so much activity happening in the brain during a swim session. Because you are using your critical thinking and physical movement, your whole brain is being worked out. This is why the leisure part AND the exercise part of swimming are equally important to your overall health. Swimming is not only for breathing, it is an amazing exercise. It is helping my brain, by having to cross the meridian and use many layers of the brain at once. “Swimming uses neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections—to fundamentally improve performance, technique, and mental health. Through repetitive, mindful practice, swimmers rewire their brains, transitioning from conscious, effortful movement to automatic, efficient technique (muscle memory).”- Go Swim on Youtube. I live in the muscle memory side of life. Through my TBI recovery, I tend to be more physical. This can be a great way for me to gain new skills without having to worry about forgetting steps. Swimming is also good for endurance. It uses and activates a lot of muscles. That’s also why you get so tired so quickly. All of that muscle being used requires energy. That’s why they say it is a good workout. It’s not only a good workout, it is a full body workout. You are using almost every muscle in your body during a swim session. I found a great illustration of this, but it doesn't show the calves. But of course the calves are being used as you propel in the water with pointed feet, which activates the calf muscles. I am curious to see how the different strokes will impact my different muscle groups; for instance the back stroke vs. the breast stroke. I am creating this series to track my experience along the way. As I mentioned it is a great exercise for almost everyone, so get in the pool! God is still the Way Maker. He makes a way when there seems to be no way. Sometimes it looks like a dead end. Sometimes it feels like there’s no way out. Sometimes things feel hopeless. But God can see the end even when we don’t. God can see paths that we aren’t aware of. God can provide rescue even when things feel hopeless. This does not happen once, it happens over your whole life. In a word, God is the Way Maker!
Even now, life can sometimes feel hopeless and frustrating. There is no easy fix for my condition. But I am certain that there is a way forward – because God is the Way Maker! When we submit to God, reverence God, place our trust in God, we find ourselves in the right place. Then, we can see what God is doing and we can have hope. Hope sometimes starts small and it can be invisible, but it can grow into something strong. It can transform our lives. Remember that God never promised us an easy life, but a fulfilled life. Are you trusting the invisible path set before you by the Way Maker? I’m standing on the top of the mountain. The view is incredible. I can see forever. I had to hike all morning to get here. The trail was difficult, but I knew that I could do all things through Him. So I knew that I could reach the mountain top. Now that I’m here, I know that it was worth the hard work. Now, here I stand. It is as if I can see the whole world. The beauty is overwhelming. The beauty almost takes my breath away. Here in this amazing place, what will I say? What will I talk about? What comes to my mind? What comes to my mind is the glory of God. What comes to my mind is God’s power. What comes to my mind is God’s creativity. How did God bring all of this into existence? How did God think of mountains and birds and animals? This amazing place makes me think of my amazing God. And God not only THOUGHT all of this up – He made it happen! How is that even possible? Imagine all that was required simply to think up and make ONE THING! And God made not only one thing, but every thing! His glory and power and creativity are intrinsic to His nature – it’s just who God is! And while we cannot explain that, we can celebrate it, wonder about it, enjoy it, and . . . choose to be amazed. And the end result is worship. Praise God . . . who dreamed up and made everything! Standing on this mountain, I feel so small. Before God’s grandeur and power, I feel like a nobody. But God loves me and knows me and finds joy in me! When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which you have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit Him? O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth! -Psalm 8: 3-4, 9 No one can hurt you without your consent. You can not choose how someone acts, but you can choose how you respond. Only if you allow things to harm you, will they. It’s not the situation, it's your judgement of the situation. So let’s not think harshly, or bad, to get stuck in the loop. Don’t give in, or worry. Make sure you give thanks and supplication to the lord. He promises a life full of blessings. Put your trust in the Father. Understand that is a part of the process of finding your strength. You need to be broken down to your limit so then He can start to build you back up stronger. You need to be broken down, to be built up. To then be on unshakable ground. YOU have the power of your thoughts and the messages you put out into the world. You do not have to ask "Mom" to have a thought. These are yours. Take the necessary actions to own them. |
